Sensitivity/Authenticity Reading & Consultation Service

Sensitivity Reading

Are you seeking to ensure authenticity and respectful representation in your writing? Sensitivity reading, also referred to as authenticity reading, is a crucial step if you are crafting characters from marginalized perspectives or experiences beyond your own.

Specializing in sensitivity reading for disability representation, I evaluate portrayals of physical disabilities, chronic pain, chronic illness, mental health conditions, and neurodiversity. My clients include Hugo Award-winning and international bestselling authors and speakers.

Whether you require a comprehensive review of your entire manuscript or specific sections, I examine the content to identify any potential issues pertaining to disability representation. Upon completion of the reading process, I provide a detailed report with observations and recommendations. This may encompass anything from nuanced language adjustments to broader developmental suggestions aimed at enhancing the overall portrayal of disability.

Investing in sensitivity reading not only fosters inclusivity and authenticity but also underscores your commitment to respectful storytelling.

Sensitivity Consultation

Sensitivity consultation is a way to get feedback on ideas or elements of your novel while you are developing your story. You may not want to hire a sensitivity reader for your entire manuscript but may want to know if a specific character, element, or plot line of your story contains any harmful disability representation.

Consultations take place over Zoom, where you will have the opportunity to delve into specific characters, elements, or plotlines on which you wish to receive feedback. I will answer questions, provide suggestions or opinions, or offer general thoughts on potential areas of concern. After each meeting, I will email a summary of our discussion alongside my recommendations.
